The Cross of Christ means Life

1 Corinthians 14:24-25

This text is in the midst of Paul's direction about the proper use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. After explaining and emphasizing the purpose of glossolalia (speaking in tongues) he contrasts the abuse of that gift with the proper use of prophecy. Notice, also, the result of genuine prophecy:

"If everyone is prophesying, their sin will be shown to them, and they will be judged by all that they hear. The secret things in their hearts will be made known."

Paul does not expect that prophecy will be restricted to "pulpit ministry". All of us should expect God to use us to speak to people "to give them strength, encouragement, and comfort" and to allow God to use us (individually and corporately) in a way that "their sin will be shown to them, and they will be judged by all that they hear. The secret things in their hearts will be made known."

The Result is True Worship. Our text indicates that when genuine prophecy occurs the effect on unbelievers who enter the assembly is: "So they will bow down and worship (proskuneo) God saying, "Truly, God is with you."

"Lord Jesus, forgive us for our failure to minister your grace in the life of others. Grant that we be ones who speak your word that You may cause people to worship You in Spirit and in Truth. Thank you that You have chosen to send your gifts through us to bless others."

Amen - let it be so.
Shalom
